Plan to scale
Backyard plan: deck, pool, shed and garden to scale
A pool, a shed, a vegetable garden: in a yard, everything competes for the same space. A plan drawn to scale shows what really fits.
Give the lot’s measurements, place the house, then what you want to add. Each item takes the measurements you type.
How do I draw a floor plan of my yard? Give the lot’s measurements, place the house, then add the rest.
How to do it
Give the lot’s measurements
Width and depth. For an angled lot, trace the boundary with fences.
Place the house
Give it its measurements and set it at its distance from the street.
Add the rest
Deck, pool, shed, vegetable garden, trees. Move them around until everything fits.
What you can place in it
Each item comes at a common size. You type in yours.

A few rules of thumb
- Before you put in a shed, a pool or a fence, check the setbacks your municipality requires: they change from one place to the next.
- The lot’s measurements can be read on your property survey, if you have one.
- Around a patio table: room to push the chairs back, about 36 in (90 cm).
Common practice, not rules: adapt them to your room and your habits.
Frequently asked questions
Is this plan enough for a permit application?
No. It helps you prepare your project. A permit application follows your municipality’s requirements, often with a property survey.
My lot is not rectangular. What do I do?
Draw the rectangle that contains it, then trace the real boundary with fences you turn to the angle you need.
