Calculate the posts and sections of a fence

Enter the total length to fence and the maximum spacing between two posts. The tool spreads the sections evenly and counts the posts, gates included.

Draw this fence on its lot

No account needed. The calculation is done in your browser: nothing is sent.

How it is calculated

The length of the gates is subtracted from the total. The rest is divided by the maximum spacing, rounded up: the sections are then all equal and never wider than the chosen spacing.

A fence open at both ends has one more post than intervals; a fence that closes on itself has as many. Each gate is one more interval, between two posts.

The calculation assumes a straight line. Each corner needs a post at that exact spot: on a real lot, draw the fence on the plan, where it takes its true length and thickness.

Before digging, check your municipality's by-law (height, distance from the street) and ask Info-Excavation to locate buried utilities.
